Nathan is the child of Scott Summers and Madelyne Pryor, a clone of Jean Grey. When he was a baby, Nathan was infected by a cybernetic organism called the TO Virus. Using a combination of his budding telepathy and telekinesis, Nathan was able to suppress the growth of the virus and was sent several thousand years into the future in hopes of finding a cure for his condition. He instead landed in a world where the conqueror Apocalypse had destroyed much of the world, and the surviving populace became a group of various warring clans fighting to survive.

By the time Nate returned to the present, he'd fought many years for Clan Askani, and had taken the name Cable. His mission was to stop the future from turning into what he'd grown up in, and since then Cable has jumped back and forth into the timestream, helping out whoever needs his help, whenever it's needed.
